DELL Alienware M14x Notebook Review

If you’re into extreme gaming performance in a gaming laptop, the Alienware M14x may just be the computer for you. This 14-inch laptop boasts high-quality hardware, but it does feel rather large for a laptop. Indeed, calling it a laptop is an exercise in relativity because, typical of Alienware machines, it’s about twice the size that you’d likely expect from a laptop. It’s pretty heavy, too, weighing in at about seven pounds, depending on the configuration. Size, weight and price aside, this system comes from one of the leading brands of gaming machines, and the M14x is lives up to the Alienware name. The standard graphics card in this gaming laptop is the NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M with 3GB of video memory. Most serious gamers will find this card is more than powerful enough for most games on the market and will not need to worry about upgrades for a number of years.
The unit we chose for comparison purposes is equipped with the Intel Core i7 2720QM Quad Core processor running at 2.2GHz with a 6MB Cache. This processor may not be the most powerful one on the market. Quad Core processors are a must in gaming laptops and 2.2GHz of processing speed will ensure excellent load times. Most gaming computers don't come with more than 8GB of RAM, which gives you good idea of where this laptop stands. The 750GB hard drive runs at 7,200 rpms and provides enough storage space for all of the major games on the market.   Alienware's light control is one of the most refined and versatile systems on any other bit of PC kit. Using the AlienFX software, which can be accessed through a handy keyboard shortcut, you can easily adjust individual light settings for the aforementioned zones – and that includes four individual zones on the keyboard alone! Not only can you change the colours on the fly between 19 different choices, but you can set them to pulse or morph between two different colours too, which can make for a really nice effect if you pick neighbouring shades. So yes, this laptop can do double duty as a disco ball, and you can make it look as garish or elegant as you like. You can even set different light profiles for different games or apps.
