The Motorola Droid Razr (GSM/UMTS version: Motorola Razr; both versions styled RAZR) is an Android-based, 4G LTE-capable smartphone designed by Motorola that launched on Verizon Wireless on November 11, 2011.
At launch, the RAZR was the thinnest smartphone in the world at only 7.1 mm thick on most of the device (it does, however, have a "bump" on top that's approximately 11.1 mm thick.) and includes a 4.3-inch (110 mm) super active-matrix organic light emitting diode (AMOLED) advanced PenTile display, covered in a Gorilla glass screen and a kevlar back plate. It is powered by an OMAP 4430 SoC with dual 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor cores. Its 8 megapixel rear facing camera can record 1080p HD videos. It comes with 1 GB of RAM and runs Android version 4.0.4.
RAZR's Design:
Motorola has discarded the flip-phone design, which is fair enough in today's touchscreen obsessed world. The front is dominated by a big 4.3in touchscreen, so there's little room for fripperies, but the tapered corners (also seen on the new Motorola Xoom 2 tablets) certainly add a little swish to the design.
Turn it around and you can see that Motorola has kept the super-sleek part of the RAZR legacy. It measures just 7.1mm for the vast majority of its length - making it arguably the thinnest smartphone available. However, a small bulge at the top extends out to 10mm, incorporating the camera lens and speaker, which makes the thinnest claim open to debate.
RAZR's Hardware:
There is a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED Advanced qHD (540 x 960) display with Gorilla Glass is clearly visible even under sunlight. The first thing you’ll notice is that the phone is huge with a bezel around the display. The phone is definitely larger than the other phones with 4.3-inch display.
The proximity and ambient light sensors are right below that on the left along with the front facing camera on the right. The capacitive touch buttons for menu, home, back and search are at the bottom that gives hap-tic feedback when pressed. There’s a small hole for the microphone below that. The lock / unlock button is on the left side with a shiny silver metal pattern.
The Volume rocker is right below that which you will hardly notice since it’s very tiny. The SIM card slot is on the bottom right side with the Micro SD card next to that. This phone uses a micro SIM and it is also the first Android phone to use this technology. It is also hot-swap so that that you can insert the SIM while the device is on and it automatically connects to the network without the need to restart. We tested a 64GB microSD card on the phone and it works fine.
The 3.5mm audio jack, Micro USB port and the HDMI out is on the top.The phone is slim throughout except for a slight bulge due to the camera module on the back.The 8MP camera is at the back that is capable of recording 1080p HD videos. The LED flash is next to the camera along with the speaker grill.The phone has soft Kevlar back that is used as body armor. The back is non-removable.
Web browsing:
The built-in Android browser is very good and there is very little need to use anything else, although there an excellent version of Opera available which is even better. We tested the mobile version of Firefox on the RAZR too, but it was very unstable and slow and cannot be recommended. Content loads very quickly, and you can pinch zoom and scroll without any delays. If you find that the screen isn't big enough then you can connect to a larger monitor with an optional HDMI cable, which is an easy way to share content with those around you. The large screen size and very high resolution display make the RAZR a much better web browsing device than the previous generation.RAZR's Camera:
The stills from the eight megapixel camera are of very high quality, but are not quite as good as those from a dedicated digital camera. The same goes for the video capture quality - good, but you'd still get better results from a dedicated HD digital camcorder.
Of course, all these dedicated gadgets are expensive, and if you were stuck with the RAZR alone then I suspect that you would still be reasonably happy with its results. In the comparison shots below you can see that the RAZR's camera produces some impressively sharp pictures that can certainly rival dedicated digital cameras in terms of sharpness, but of course most digital camera come with far superior zoom and flash facilities.
Video capture capabilities are also very good with 1080p HD video capture which works well in most circumstances. Again, a dedicated digital video camera will probably give better results overall (especially with optical zoom), but the RAZR does a very good job overall.
RAZR's Battery and Storage:
A rechargeable Lithium-Ion battery of 1780 mAh capacity that supports talk time of up to 10 hours and standby time of up to 324 hours. The Music app has a lot of customisable options. These include several effects profiles to change the way the audio sounds, surround effects, and five equaliser presets. However, custom equaliser setting is not available. Signal quality is good, and you will rarely lose reception using a Motorola handset. In our call voice quality experience, it is the hands-free that seems to work the best, followed by the speaker-phone, while the in-built earpiece in the handset tends to distort sound. The keyboard is a standard Gingerbread affair, so we have nothing new to talk about. It's has a active noise cancellation with dedicated mic, SNS integration. You can Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Google Talk, Picasa integrationwith it easily.
