Dell XPS 15z Review and Specification

The Dell XPS 15z is a impressive laptop computer. This device offers a variety of features that appreciate your computing experience, with a large display screen, powerful processor and graphics card and an excellent battery life. The Dell XPS 15z is our Top Ten REVIEWS Bronze Award winner because of the extensive feature set, high performance and extensive memory and battery. This laptop computer provides different type of features for any type of work – business, school and play – and it's a difficult computer to beat.

Design

If you like ultra-slim, aluminum laptops and are looking for something with a little more screen irrefutable estate than your average ultra-portable, Dell's new XPS 15z is the right product for you. With highlights like a anodized aluminum outer unibody shell, magnesium palm rests, optional Full HD screen and Core i7 under the hood, this is one remarkable candidate – yet it's still less than an inch thick!
It looks very stylish, as the company has kept its lines clean and simple, with no patterns a la the HP tm2 to distract the eye. As with the older Dell XPS 15, the base protrudes a little at the rear. Like the hinge (which looks somewhat like a piece of metal shower hose) it will probably divide opinions, but we like the effect.

Display

The disturbance with most glossy displays, especially those that are geared mostly toward the consumer market, is that they offer far from ideal viewing angles. Unfortunately, the Dell XPS 15z also suffers from this fate, even if it’s not quite as pronounced as the displays on its cheaper Inspiration stablemates. Yes, the colors are fairly bright and vibrant when they need to be, but the back-lighting starts to wash out quite a bit of the content as soon as you allowance the “sweet spot” of viewing. This makes it less than ideal to share content with the people around you and I noticed this washing out in as little as 30-40 degrees from the center.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The keyboard include to the luxury feel. First, there’s the shape of the keys, all rounded edges with a slightly round surface. Then there’s the letters and symbols adorning them, which have a futuristic look. Finally, there’s the size: although this isn’t a full-width keyboard, large gaps between rows mean it’s well suited to large hands.
The given mouse replacement also consistent blends into the overall appearance. It has the same color and apparent texture as the surrounding wrist-rest. The pad's gliding traits are acceptable. We find the Dell-typical touch-pad keys with a very clear key drop and soft, almost silent stroke noise very pleasant. The inserted touch-pad should generally have multi-touch capabilities. But we had a few problems triggering these with precisely. Even scrolling, frequently used in text documents by placing and sliding two fingers, only worked with doubt.

Graphics

The Dell XPS 15z comes with two graphics chips: an integrated Intel HD GPU, and a discrete Nvidia GeForce GT525M processor with 2GB of video memory. Using Nvidia's Optimus technology, the XPS 15z switches between the two based on need. By Using the Nvidia GPU, the XPS 15z notched a score of 7,420 in 3DMark06, nearly twice the average (3,910). However, the MacBook Pro, with its AMD Radeon HD 6750M graphics, scored (10,359) and the XPS 15, which has an Nvidia GeForce GT540M GPU, scored 8,101. The same category repeated itself on our gaming tests. In Far Cry 2, the XPS 15z saw 26 fps at its native resolution and graphics at Very High, which adventitious the category average by 9 fps, but came in just behind the XPS 15 (29 fps). In World of Warcraft, the XPS 15z averaged 35 fps with effects at Ultra; that was also better than the mainstream average (27 fps), but well behind the MacBook Pro (43 fps) and the XPS 15 (53 fps).

Performance

Our assessment unit was the best possible configuration, with a 2.7-GHz Intel Core i7-2620M processor with and 8GB of RAM. The 750GB 7,200-rpm hard drive booted into Windows 7 Home Premium in just over a minute, which is slightly on the conservative side. Over all it gives a good performance when it comes to multitasking and churns out every bit of power out of the processor. The XPS 15z comes with two graphics chips: an integrated Intel HD GPU, and a discrete Nvidia GeForce GT525M processor with 2GB of video memory. By using Nvidia's Optimus technology, the XPS 15z switches between the two based on need. I played Far Cry 2 on the 15Z and graphics performance was top notch. But the exoskeleton really heats up after long hours of play and the heat is felt even more due to its magnesium alloy exoskeleton.

Memory

The Dell XPS 15z is offering an excellent amount of memory. There is 6GB of RAM available on this device and 750GB of hard drive memory available. This device offers one of the highest amounts of memory we saw on a laptop computer and provides you with an ample amount of space for all your important data.

Software

The Dell XPS 15z comes with trials of Adobe Photoshop Elements 8, McAfee Security Center, Microsoft Office Starter 2010, Roxio Creater Starter, and Skype. Dell-branded apps adds Webcam Central and Dell Stage, which provides shortcuts to programs, multimedia files, support, etc., but takes up a lot of room on the desktop.

Battery life

The Dell XPS 15z is a really great combination of design, features, performance, battery life and all-round appeal. It's a good multimedia system with an incomparable screen and the 3D output option, a workhorse system that will deliver performance with demanding software and a designer system that barely compromises to get its good looks unless you were dead-set on a Blu-ray drive.
